Tyco CC-01 Chassis

     Tyco CC-01 Chassis. The original Command Control chassis. You will notice similarity to the Ideal Toys TCR MK.1 or MK.2 Chassis, both companies copied each others designs. This is called a Skid steer because it uses the rear tires to turn left or right.

     Tyco claimed the CC-02 chassis was a 30% faster improvement over the CC-01 with better steering response. When I tested both the 01 and 02 I found the top speed to be the same in both cars however the 02 obviously performed much better and was easier to control.

     This Chassis was in production from 1978 to 1979.

     The CC-01 had a lot of problems. Rear traction was a big part of the problem. Tyco used hard rubber tires on the rear. The front end was a Fixed axle that used plastic tires. The combination of one wheel drive and almost no traction made a chassis that was very close to un-driveable.

     The chassis shown here on the left is using Jel Claw 440x2 rear tires because the original rubber tires had disintegrated from old age.

The rear tire hubs are the same size as the CC-02 the axle is not interchangeable.

    Rear gears are white and grey colored. Rear tires are driven independently. Steering is accomplished by sending motor power to either the left or right rear tire. Only one tire drives the car in any given direction. The CC-02 improved rear traction by having both rear tires drive the car, and moved steering action to the front axle.

     The gears in the photo to the left had never been used and show cracks because of the press fit of the metal inserts. They will require sleeving to keep them from falling apart the CC-02 has the same issue.

     The rear pinion gear is a 7T, Spur gear is 25T. final drive ratio: 3.57:1

   The wire from the front bumper over the front axle is a primitive suspension system. Unlike the Ideal MK.1 and MK.2 chassis there was no suspension other then the springs of the contact shoes. The CC-02 moved the front suspension to underneath the chassis as the contact shoe springs. The CC-01 uses a primitive system allowing the front axle some give and leaf spring cutouts on the contact shoes.

     This is the 'A' Chassis Configuration. The original Command control cars came fixed as either A or B chassis. You had to buy one of each to have a complete set.

     The CC-01 could be setup in 'A' or 'B' configuration easily compared to a CC-02 which needed to be modified to use a spring in the disused contact shoe spot.

     You could of also used CC-01 contact shoes on the CC-02 chassis and it would of made the CC-02 much easier to convert into 'A' or 'B'

     You will notice the front pick up shoes are unique to the CC-01 as well. Tyco used leaf spring cut outs in the shoes as primitive springs, a stark comparison to the CC-02  which used real springs. This is a problem because the older contact shoe design no longer exists. They are not interchangeable with the CC-02 without heavy modifications.

     The front bumper serves almost no purpose in guiding the car along the track. Tyco put little black plastic hub caps on all 4 rims to guide the car along the walls of the track. This causes the chassis to bounce erratically all over the place and slow the car down. To drive the chassis you must maintain top speed to avoid drifting off the power rails and stall out.

     The original Command Control chassis could only use one lane of travel the outside lane reliably. This made changing lanes and passing the lead car next to impossible. Without heavy modifications to the chassis it is a history lesson in what not to design.

I have seen some CC-01 chassis that have a lead weight just in front of the rear bumper to try and increase rear tire traction, these seem to be early cars and rare.
